How many angels can stand on the tip of a needle? This question comes from Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theology. The reason for asking this seemingly full and too leisurely question actually has a very serious theological significance behind it. Can two angels stand on the tip of a needle? The fundamentalist Aquinas himself gave the answer "No." This is a bit like the Pauli exclusion principle, two angels cannot occupy a space at the same time, so at most one, please come earlier next time. However, later scholastics did not agree with him. Because angels are not entities, angels have no mass, so Aquinas's reasoning does not hold. Angels banner design are a rational type in Christian theology. "Rational form" comes from Plato's philosophy (Theory of forms). Applying the concept of the Diamond Sutra, an angel is not an angel, but an angel. Angels do not refer to real, but to refer to, referring to God's assistants, beings who are more perfect than humans, guides of heaven, protectors of truth...etc. So there are an infinite number of correct answers to this question. Because angels are not entities and do not occupy space. Why argue about this? Hearing this, most people just yawn and mumble, "Theologians are boring," but theologians don't think so.
